Jarl Andræs Mikkelgaard was born in 1027 to Rögnvald, Earl of Orkney and foster son of Olaf, King of Norway, and Thora. He was named Erling by his parents. Rögnvald was born in 1011 in Orkneyar to Brúsi, Earl of Orkney, and Ostrida. Thora, wife of Rögnvald, was born near Nidaros to a leading bønder, Jon. Brúsi was born in 987 in Orkneyar to Sigurd the Stout, Earl of Orkney. Ostrida, wife of Brúsi, was born in 990 on Gotland, to Regenwald. Sigurd the Stout was born in 960 in Orkneyar to Hlovder, Earl of Orkney, and Audna, daughter of Cearbhall (Kjarval). Sigurd had four sons and later married Anleta, daughter of Malcolm II and Aefgifu, King and Queen of Scotland, giving birth to Thorfinn. Sigurd died valiantly in 1024 at Brian's Battle at Clontarf, Ireland. Hlodver was born in 924 in Orkneyar as the fifth son of Thorfinn Hausakliuf, the skull-splitter, Earl of Orkney, and Grelauga, daughter of Duncan, Earl of Caithness and Sutherland. Hlodver assumed sole control of Orkneyar from his brothers Arnfinn, Havard, and Liot. Hlodver died in 980 at Hofn in Caithness. Thorfinn was the son of Torf Einar, Earl of Orkney. Thorfinn died in 963. Einar was the son of Rögnvald the Wise, Earl of Mæri, and Ragnhild, daughter of Hrolf Nefia. Einar's brother, Hrolf, is known as the Conqueror of Normandy. Einar's father, Rögnvald, gave the Earldom of Orkney to his younger brother, Sigurd, whose son, Guttorm, died without an heir, thus the Earldom passed back to Rögnvald's line and his son, Einar. Einar died circa 910. Rögnvald was the son of Eystein Glumra and Ascrida, the daughter of Rögnvald, son of Olaf Geristade, King of Vestfold. Rögnvald died in 890. Eystein Glumra was born in Trøndelag, the son of Ivar, Earl of Upplendinga, and the daughter of Eyestein. Ivar was born in Oppland, the son of Halfdan.
